Most concussions happing in sports can be prevented

The behavior and the culture of sport play a significant role in the reduction of concussion. The most important messages around concussion prevention and reduction are:

  • Helmets do not protect against concussion – but helmets can protect against severe head injuries like skull fractures 
  • Teach proper tackling techniques – do not use head as a weapon,
  • Play by the rules of the game – disallowing bodychecking in youth ice hockey reduced concussions by 50%
  • Your standards and values around concussion reporting is decisive of reporting behaviour
  • Language about concussion is important – it is not just a bump to the head
  • Preventive exercise programs also reduce risk of concussion
